about

Each of these pieces sets work written by a poet who has lived and worked in New York City. Their voices, ranging from dark and introspective to humorous and disjunct, reflect the city’s diversity, and the many (often conflicting) ways that artists approach it.

The poets’ words, both written and spoken, have heavily shaped these compositions and improvisations. The melody to Free Country is a direct transcription of a recitation by Emily Ruth Hazel, and the pauses in Heart as Arena correspond with Paolo Javier’s use of space on the printed page. Allowing each poem to instate a new set of rules forced me to stretch myself compositionally and performatively. The result is an experiment in style and an exploration of the thick gradient between composition and improvisation, made possible by the expert skills and adventurous spirits of Evan, Matthew, and Ronen.
